This time of year we celebrate the return of the light
The longest night just passed
I wonder how you’ve been in your part of the world
In those dark places where rays of light can’t reach
where the darkest night light up
by falling bombs from the sky
and despair is your only friend left
You didn’t ask for any of this
☆
Each morning when I wake up I light a candle
for you and your brother and sister
on the other side of the fence
nobody asked for
The return of the light
this longest night forever gone
You didn’t ask for any of this
☆
A candle to compensate the darkest darkness
somewhere else in the world
to send hope your way
so you’ve got a new friend
like a little brother or sister
who picks you up when you’re scared
and whispers in your ear
words of a lost world
from a time animals could still speak
and protected you from harm
while you flew away on their backs
to a faraway land with trees so tall
where villains always wore black
black as the sun is right now
☆
In the longest night of the year
the deer’s back is still here
to take you away from the pain and cold
she whispers words we cannot hear
a language you both understand
it’s the language of those without a voice
☆
If humans can’t speak the language of love anymore,
the animals will
In the darkness of night
there’s a light shining for you, child
somehow it will reach you
beyond your deepest dreams
☆
Blood can’t stick to hands
that only demand peace in your part of the world
and wish for you to hear the songs of birds again
in your dark part of the world
☆
My child, these december days may never been so stark
but those who are willing will always carry you
through the darkness and beyond
just so you can hear the birds sing to you
when you wake up
from these nights so cold
from this bad dream you’re in
When the light returns.
